HOCKEY NIGHT IN BOSTON TEAM GAME CONCEPTS & SYSTEMS
Forecheck: (1-2-2 aggressive) 2-1-2: First forward angle and finish check. 2nd forward take away the boards on strong side face-off circle hash mark; then read and react. 3rd forward play high on strong side top of the circle.
Neutral Zone Forcheck: (1-2-2) similiar to offensive zone. Strong side D up. Weak side D stagger in middle support.
Backcheck: the open man; not the puck; communicate with the defenseman.
D-Zone Coverage: 1D attack puck. 2nd D net front. Center support puck side. Weak side wing support slot. Strong side wing top of circle cover strong side opposing defenseman.
Penalty Kill: Aggressive down low. Passive up top. 1 D net front. Weak side wing in slot support.
Power Play: Overload to umbrella shot. 2 Forwards in front. Outnumber penalty killers at all times.
Shift Length/Line Changes: 30-45 seconds. Short hard shifts. Communicate your position when changing. Only change when the puck is deep in the offensive zone. Only 1 D changes at a time.
Weak Side Winger Stetch: The weak side wing will always stretch the ice from the defensive zone when we gain full possession of the puck. This creates room in the neutral zone for the attack.
Defenseman 4th Forward: We want to play lightning style hockey. One defenseman will join the attack and become the 4th forward. Pick your spot but be aggressive.
Communicate: Take charge on the ice. Play your position. Do YOUR job.
Block Shots: Position yourself in shooting lanes defensively and place stick in passing lanes.
Crash Net: Think shot first and crash the net for rebounds. Don't over think offensively.
Turnovers: Avoid turnovers at the defensive blue-line and offensive blue-line. Attack with speed.
Defenseman: Stagger; strong side D up, weak side D stagger in middle of ice. No cross ice passes or backhands in defensive zone.
*Players must play with passion and battle; however undisciplined penalties are not tolerated. Be a good positive teammate.
